SERVICES RENDERED IN THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemical Pathology provides comprehensive biochemical diagnostic and Clinical Services to Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, other Hospitals/Clinics, Health Centre and General Practioners within and outside Kaduna State.

• Provision of accurate and reliable results of biochemical investigations conducted on patients and to ensure that such results are appropriate to the patient’s clinical condition.


• Provision of interpretative comments on the laboratory reports of special investigations and when appropriate on routine investigations.


• To suggest further appropriate investigations when necessary.
• To help in monitoring and control of therapy of individual patients when requested.
• Offering of a wide range of services for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of metabolic disorders, inborn errors of metabolism.
• To organize and conduct dynamic function tests such as:
  1. Oral glucose tolerance test
  2. Triple function test
  3. Dexamethasone Suppression tests
  4. Water deprivation test.
  5. Insulin stress test
  6. Glucose suppression test/exercise tests for growth hormone reserve
  7. Urine acidification tests
  8. Synathen/Tetracosactrin stimulation test
  9. Other dynamic function tests are available on request
  10. Training of undergraduate medical students, Resident Doctors and provision of practical experience to intern Medical Laboratory Scientists.

TIME TABLE FOR CLINIC DAYS

The Department conduct weekly metabolic clinic to review all patients presenting with metabolic disorders.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The department is involved in the research activities involving post graduate supervisions and collaborative research works with other departments and outside the Teaching Hospital.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Chemical Pathology & Immunology is taught by Pathologists, who are medically qualified graduates with postgraduate training in Chemical Pathology or Laboratory Medicine. Courses in chemical pathology are taught to medical student in second semester of 300 level and throughout their 400 level. During this period, students are involved in vigorous academic exercises of lectures, tutorials, practicals, Assignments, seminars and case presentations with result interpretations. The department is involved in the training of Students on Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) from various tertiary institutions rotating through the department.
