SERVICES RENDERED IN THE DEPARTMENT

The service component of the department involves provision of both clinical and laboratory services to the public.

• The clinical service provision by the department includes; running a weekly haematology clinic where patients with haematological disorders like sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia, aplastic anaemia, etc are seen. A thrombosis and bleeding disorder clinic is also run where patients with haemophilia, venous thromboembolic and other benign haematologic disorders are seen. The consultants in the department provide on-ward patient consultations at the request of other attending consultants in addition to in-patient care of cases of primarily haematologic origin.


• Laboratory services provided by the department include; routine manual and automated blood counts and morphological profiling, coagulation screening and specialized haemostasis investigations, transfusion medicine services, which include but are not limited to blood grouping, antibody screening and blood/blood product provision, and investigations for Haemoglobinopathies.

• Mondays – Academic Days.


• Tuesdays – Consultants Ward Round.


• Wednesdays – Haemostasis Clinic.


• Thursdays – Haematology Clinic.


• Fridays – Ward round consultant on-call.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

As one of the teaching arms of the clinical sciences of the College of Medicine, medical students undergo a vigorous rotation comprising of lectures, tutorials, practicals and bedside teaching (both in clinic and in the wards). The department is also actively involved in training intern doctors, intern medical laboratory scientists, medical laboratory technicians and other exchange students on industrial training. It also has the capacity to train resident doctors.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The department is involved in research and management collaborations predominantly in the areas of sickle cell disease and haemophilia with other departments in the hospital, non-medical departments in the university, International institutions as well as non-governmental organizations.
